Imagine if your beloved one brought home a new partner and said “Hey honey, I was kind of bored with you, so look, we have someone new in our family!” Your established cat can think that way if you are bringing home a new cat into the family. Minimize the jealousy, anxiety and fear with these great cat introduction tips:
- Are they age-compatible? I once brought home a 16-week-old kitten, to a 17-year-old cat. The kitten had so much energy and enthusiasm that the elderly cat had no idea what to do! A 10-year-old cat would have been a better choice as a companion to the elderly cat, and it meant a lot of work for me to be the kitten’s play companion while he grew up. Remember to try to get cats that are roughly similar in age.
- If you have a few cats in the house already, introduce the new cat to your top cat first, and let the others meet up afterwards. If the introduction with the top cat goes well, your other feline family members will be more accepting.
- Don’t neglect any cat in favor of another. Cuddles, pets, snuggles and chin scratches are a requirement for all cats, in equal measure. Let each cat know how much you love her!
- If at all possible, do not be the person to bring the new cat into the home. Ask a friend, neighbor or family member to bring home your new family member. If your established cat is going to be made at someone for bringing home an intruder, let it be a neighbor and not you!
With love and caring, patience and sometimes some steely nerves, you can increase your cat family size in harmony and peace!
