Let
me state right up front that I have owned 7 cats, and have never
purchased cat health insurance or cat life insurance. Let me also state
right up front, sometimes I really wish I had!
When you begin to look for a pet health
insurance plan, be sure you look at all of the fine print before you
purchase any product. If you have a rescued moggy, or a gift cat, you
may have a hard time trying to justify spending what can amount to a lot
of money to insure your cat's health. On the other hand, if you spent
hundreds of dollars on a pure breed cat, the investment might seem
easier to justify. But remember, it isn't about the value of your cat,
it's about the worth of your cat!
Things to Consider
- Is your cat an indoor, or outdoor cat?
Indoor cats don't generally need coverage for things such as
accidents so be sure you understand what "accident
insurance" means for a cat, but they might need "high rise
syndrome" cat health insurance, if they fall out of a high rise
building
- does the insurance cover hereditary
illnesses, or breed-specific health problems? For example, Persians
may have respiratory and eye problems that other breeds don't have:
make sure your insurance policy will cover it
- Does your policy cover pre-existing
conditions? Probably not. Make sure you understand what
"pre-existing" really means: does it mean the illness is
likely to have existed (and who makes that decision), or does it
mean diagnosed by a vet?
- Will your plan cover routine vaccinations
and medical visits? For the first 10 years of your cat's life, he
may be healthy and the only costs you'll incur are standard vet
bills
- Will your cat health insurance cover him as
he gets older? Cats over the age of 8 begin to require more tests as
part of a routine visit, including bloodwork and chemical tests
- Can you switch plans easily? If your outdoor
cat becomes an indoor cat when you move from the country to the
city, how portable and useful is your plan?
- If you've made one claim, do your rates go
up? If you aren't sure, ask! And if you make a claim on one plan,
does that prevent you from switching plans?
- Is there a discount cat health insurance
offer for multi-cat households?
- Will they offer a discount if your cat has a
microchip?
- Is there a minimum deductible for any claim?
For example, does your pet insurance provider pay only after the
first $200 for routine vet visits? If so, ask yourself how often you
spend $200 per visit!
- Get serious about pet health care and find
out about the company offering the product: how long have they been
in business? How many plan subscribers do they have? Do they offer
cat health insurance, or a general pet health insurance? The
differences between dog health insurance and cat health insurance can be big!
Cat insurance rates will cost you $10 a month as a minimum.
Over the lifetime of a cat, health insurance could cost you $1200.
Compare that to a few trips to a vet, and you will see how practical cat
health insurance can be.
